Selection procedures
Fill in the application form on the website (click on the ‘Apply’ link above). Yup, it’s long - but that helps us get a feel for you and your wishes straight away - and it also makes you examine your own ideas and feelings! If you would prefer, you can apply using our paper form found in our brochure. Please Click Here if you would like to receive a brochure and an information pack.
We always interview potential participants. If we have to do it on the phone, we can, but generally we find that a proper face-to-face meeting establishes a relationship between us and speeds up the whole process of tailoring a perfect placement for you.
You will be invited to East Sussex to meet the team and - quite possibly - other people you may be travelling with. The day includes:
- A presentation on your preferred destination
- Opportunities to ask questions or talk to team members
- An informal interview so that we can find out more about your experiences and what you want to gain from your gap year.
It’s great if people have taken a bit of time to find out about the place they’re aiming for; better to be interested than choose at random.
Parents or friends are very welcome to come for all or part of the day. We have a comfy sofa for them to sit on whilst we run through the interview one-to-one.
Preparation
If you are offered a place and decide to accept, you have a brief period of relaxation while we set up your placement, organise visas and book flights. If you want to book your own flights, let us know. Otherwise, your only chores are arranging medical checks, injections and travel insurance - we are happy to give advice on all of these.
Pre Departure Course
Shortly before leaving, your group will attend a course to prepare you for living abroad. This includes a briefing on your destination - culture, customs, language, history and dress - as well as the job you will do and any health and safety issues. There will be plenty of question time. This is a great opportunity for you to meet the people that you will be travelling with.
Arrival
You will be seen off by us and met on arrival by our representative, who will get you settled and give you a further briefing. Most destinations provide orientations of up to four days (in Brazil, Chile and Tremblant there will also be formal language training lasting up to three weeks).
