Volunteer Projects in Sikkim, India

Oyster is excited to announce the launch of our new India project.

Girl Overview These community placements are right in the heart of the Himalayas in the former Himalayan Kingdom of Sikkim. Sikkim is a Buddhist state and has a unique culture that has roots in Indian and Tibetan cultures. This will suit volunteers with a passion for the outdoors and a desire to see this unspoilt corner of India. Volunteers need to be able to connect with their hospitable hosts, enjoy their way of life and be prepared to bring something of themselves e.g. sport, music or art.

Volunteer work On arrival in Sikkim volunteers start with an orientation course that builds on the Pre departure course. The orientation will include some language training and a short trek. There are a number of options that involve working with children and an opportunity to get involved in an eco tourism program. Local village schools would welcome help with their English teaching and you would work with the local teachers. We are keen to find volunteers with other talents, for example, sport and music that they can share with the local community in an informal way.

Living in Sikkim Local families will host the volunteers as their guests; they will very quickly help you to settle in as part of the family. Although it is important to be culturally sensitive, the families are very relaxed. Every household has electricity and running water and there is mobile reception. Wholesome local food will be provided while you are with your host family. The diet is mainly vegetarian and depends on what is in season with a strong Tibetan influence.

MonksOyster Support Our representative, Kama Taka is based in the capital Gangtok. All our India volunteers meet on our UK Pre departure course. It is a relaxed opportunity to get to know your fellow volunteers and is designed to give you confidence in what you are about to do.

Cost Included are flights, accommodation, food with family, briefings in the UK and in Sikkim £2395 for 2 months - longer stays are possible subject to visa requirements.
