Description

Working with partner organisations in Portugal, we are delighted to offer e-volunteering projects with ultimate remote immersion. Play an important role doing online volunteering for charities, also known as non-governmental organisations (NGOs) who aim to create a positive impact on communities and the environment in different areas such as animal protection, ocean conservation, education and poverty. The non-profit organisation that you will be partnered with will have a limited budget, and the challenges of covid-19 will be making their work even harder to achieve. You will be assigned to one of the NGOs to match your experience or interests, so that both you and the charity will benefit from your time spent.

Internet-based volunteering has no fixed hours, which makes it suitable for everyone looking for a new challenge alongside their existing commitments. Volunteers can choose the amount of time they wish to dedicate to the project at the point of booking. The options are 75 hours (equivalent of 2 weeks full time), 225 hours (equivalent of 6 weeks full time) and 500 hours (equivalent of 12 weeks full time).

You do not need previous experience for online volunteering in Portugal. The only thing that you will need to take part is access to a computer and the internet.

You do not have to be there in person to create positive impacts, and we look forward to welcoming you and other global volunteers to volunteer in Europe from the comfort of their own home.

The online volunteering programme in Portugal

Volunteers can start each week, and the sessions will be as follows:

  • Monday: welcome orientation to the country and programme. This is a virtual interactive session including ice-breaker activities with other virtual volunteers and a presentation covering an introduction to the country and culture, the volunteer experience and what to expect.
  • Tuesday: introduction to the local NGO. The NGO presents its work, mission and beneficiaries. It also presents learning options and what the volunteer opportunity entails, including your role, tasks and schedule.
  • Rest of programme: In addition to the agreed schedule with your NGO, you will receive weekly online sessions including but not limited to:
    • Mentoring: from the local staff and the project staff
    • Training: online training for soft skills development
    • Cultural development: sessions about local culture, local community, language, history and geography
    • Individual and group reflection sessions: meet other international volunteers and reflect on your experiences
    • Meet-ups: online sessions with NGO and local staff
    • Tips: on sustainable living and travel
  • End of programme: orientation and certificate of completion including the number of hours, tasks performed, purpose of the project, skills achieved and developed

What sort of volunteer projects can I do from home?

  • Teaching, training and sports

If you are interested in helping to empower people through education and activities, you can share your skills and hobbies online with people with disabilities, kids that need educational support and the elderly. These people are particularly vulnerable at this time, and helping to keep them motivated and engaged is essential. Examples of tasks on this volunteers program can be leading a yoga or fitness class remotely, teaching English online and offering conversation classes, vocabulary sessions, role plays and encouragement, or teaching people your chosen skill via the internet, either in 1-1 sessions or classes with small groups.

  • Sales, fundraising and marketing

Currently, nonprofit organisations need more financial help than ever to support their day to day operations, and sales and fundraising is intrinsic to that. As an online fundraiser, you would be helping to raise funds using social media, email campaigns and crowdfunding pages, amongst other things. Tasks can include identifying and approaching potential sponsors, writing / designing fundraising communications, updating donors’ databases, coordinating and planning fundraising activities etc.
