Porto, Portugal — a vibrant riverside city near the Atlantic coast, known for its surf culture, UNESCO-listed old town, and rich local traditions.

Group/individual basis

You will travel as an individual but join a group of international volunteers at the project.

Accommodation

Shared hostel-style accommodation in central Porto, close to the Douro River and metro links. Rooms have en suite bathrooms, air conditioning, and personal storage. Buffet breakfast is served daily, and lunch and dinner are provided at a nearby local restaurant. Private rooms may be available on request.


Travel arrangements

Fly into Porto (OPO) airport. You’ll be collected on arrival and transferred to the accommodation. Return transfers at the end of the programme are not included.


Pre-departure briefing

You’ll receive detailed information about your project, responsibilities, arrival logistics, and life in Porto approximately four weeks before departure.


Medical

Vaccinations are not typically required for Portugal, but please consult your doctor or travel nurse. Let us know about any pre-existing physical or mental health conditions prior to booking.


Insurance

You must take out comprehensive travel insurance covering medical care, personal accident, cancellation, emergency evacuation, and lost luggage. Organise this as soon as your place is confirmed.


Any risk factors

Porto is considered a safe city with a low crime rate. As in many urban areas, pickpocketing can occur — keep valuables secure and follow advice from your local coordinator.


Downtime

You’ll have free afternoons, evenings, and weekends to explore Porto independently or relax at the beach. Optional language lessons, tours, and cultural activities are available to book once in-country.


Accessibility

This programme includes physical activities such as surfing and walking on beaches. It may not be suitable for volunteers with reduced mobility. Please discuss any access needs with us in advance.


Financial Security

When you book with Oyster you can rest assured that your money will be protected and you will not be stranded abroad in the very unlikely event that our company becomes insolvent.  If your booking includes a flight arranged by us, your whole trip will be subject to ATOL protection.  If we have not booked your flight then your trip will be just as safe, since it will be insured through financial protection.
