Map of Tanzania and East Africa And Our Projects

Our Tanzania and Zanzibar programmes are designed for people who want more than just a holiday. You can combine work, volunteering, travel, adventure and time by the beach, up one of the most famous mountains in the world, on safari, or learning a new sport  – creating an experience that fits your interests, your ambitions and the amount of time you have available.

Spend time exploring Tanzania’s incredible wildlife and landscapes, discover local culture, learn new skills, contribute to meaningful projects or head to Zanzibar for beaches, ocean adventures and island life. You can combine different experiences to create a longer-term Tanzania adventure, gap year or travel retreat that’s completely your own.

From exploring local communities and discovering East African culture to learning new skills, meeting people from around the world, surfing, diving or simply swapping the everyday routine for somewhere completely different – your Oyster Worldwide Tanzania adventure can look however you want it to.

Build Your Own Tanzania Adventure

Why choose just one experience?

With Oyster, you can create your own Tanzania adventure by combining one, two or three experiences across Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania. Start with a week of wellness and surfing in Zanzibar, add a few days exploring the island, then head to mainland Tanzania for a safari or climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

You choose the experiences. We help you put them together.

Step 1 — Choose your Zanzibar experience

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. UK citizens travelling to Tanzania need a visa. For most travellers, this can be arranged online through Tanzania’s e-visa system before departure. Your passport must also have at least six months’ validity remaining and at least one blank page.

Tanzania is a popular destination for international travellers, but, like anywhere, it’s important to take sensible precautions. We recommend following current UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advice, using reputable transport and accommodation, avoiding walking alone at night and taking care of valuables. We’ll provide practical pre-departure guidance so you know what to expect when you arrive and all of our programmes have been personally visited and checked by a member of the Oyster Worldwide operations team!

Health requirements depend on your itinerary, previous vaccinations and where you’re travelling from. Some travellers may need a yellow fever certificate, while malaria prevention is also an important consideration in Tanzania and Zanzibar. It’s recommended that UK travellers check the latest advice and speak to a GP, travel clinic or TravelHealthPro well before travelling.

Tanzania and Zanzibar can be visited throughout much of the year which makes it an ideal all-round location, but the best time depends on what you want to do. June to October is generally a popular period for dry weather, wildlife and beach travel, while December to February offers another good window for sunshine, warm weather and combining a Zanzibar beach side stay with a Tanzania mainland adventure!

Yes – and there is an additional requirement that UK/ EU travellers should know about. All visitors to Zanzibar, excluding residents, are required to have mandatory inbound travel insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) for their stay, currently up to 92 days. This is separate from your normal travel insurance, which you should still have for medical treatment, cancellation, baggage and other unexpected costs.

Tanzania isn’t just for solo travellers. Our experiences can be tailored for:

  • Solo travellers – Meet people, learn new skills and explore independently
  • Couples – Combine adventure, wellness and time to explore together
  • Friends & groups – Build a shared adventure around your interests
  • Families – Family-friendly volunteering and experiences for parents and children
