Project story

“I’ve travelled the East Coast myself and it’s hands-down one of the best ways to experience Australia. It’s the perfect mix of fun, freedom and new friendships,” says Georgie, Director of Operations.
More Information
-
18 to 35-year-olds looking for a social, structured and activity-packed way to travel Australia
-
Solo travellers – especially first-timers – who want to meet people and explore without planning everything themselves
-
Gap year students, university leavers or career breakers wanting a flexible mix of beach life, adventure and culture
-
Those interested in backpacking with guidance – ideal if you want a taste of independence but with support and a group leader
-
Anyone who wants to experience the best of Australia’s East Coast in one unforgettable trip – including the Whitsundays, Fraser Island and the Great Barrier Reef
It’s perfect if you want to see a lot, make friends, and enjoy your travels stress-free – without worrying about booking hostels, finding buses or missing out on must-do experiences.
The most popular time to join this tour is November to March, when Australia is in full summer mode. Expect hot, sunny days, perfect beach weather, and a buzzing atmosphere in coastal towns. It’s an ideal time for swimming, snorkelling, and making the most of the East Coast’s outdoor lifestyle.
That said, June to August can also be a fantastic time to travel, especially in northern Queensland, where the weather stays warm and dry. It’s a great option for those who prefer smaller crowds, cooler evenings, and excellent conditions for exploring the Great Barrier Reef and tropical rainforests.
You should budget around £40–£50 per day to cover food, drinks, and any optional activities. Most of your transport and accommodation is already included, and some meals and experiences (like Fraser Island, Whitsundays, and the Great Barrier Reef) are covered too — so your daily expenses will be relatively low.
Over 5 weeks, that adds up to around £900–£1,200. If you plan to do extra activities like skydiving or scuba diving, you might want to set aside a little more.
Activities can be pre-booked.
Holiday Visa:
If you’re joining the 5-week East Coast tour purely as a tourist, you’ll need a valid visitor visa. Most UK passport holders are eligible for an eVisitor visa (subclass 651), which allows you to stay in Australia for up to 3 months. This visa is free to apply for and usually processed quickly. It’s ideal if you’re travelling for leisure and not planning to work.
Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417 or 462):
If you want to stay on in Australia after the tour to take part in a work programme, such as our City Work or Equine Work options, you’ll need a Working Holiday Visa. This visa lets you live, travel, and work in Australia for up to 12 months.
-
Apply for a subclass 417 visa if you’re from a country like the UK, Ireland, Canada, or France
-
Some nationalities (e.g. USA, China, Indonesia) should apply for the subclass 462 visa
To be eligible, you’ll need:
-
A valid passport from an eligible country
-
To be aged 18–30 (or 35 for some countries including the UK)
-
Proof of funds (approx. AUD $5,000 for your stay)
-
To meet health and character requirements
-
To apply before entering Australia
Absolutely — yes! Friends and groups are very welcome on this tour. Whether you’re travelling with one friend or a small group, we can arrange for you to be placed in the same group, stay in the same accommodation, and enjoy the full experience together. Just let us know at the time of booking, and we’ll make sure you’re kept together wherever possible.
Group sizes are typically between 6 and 24 people, with most travellers joining solo or in pairs. It’s the perfect size to keep things social, without feeling overcrowded — and you’ll quickly get to know your fellow travellers. The group stays together from Sydney to Cairns, with a dedicated guide throughout.
We recommend booking at least 4–6 weeks in advance to secure your place — especially if you’re planning to travel during the busy summer season (November to March). Places on the Whitsundays sailing trip and Fraser Island tour are limited, and accommodation in popular coastal towns can fill quickly.
If you’re travelling with a friend or want to guarantee your preferred start date, booking 2–3 months ahead is ideal. This also gives you time to sort out flights, visas, and insurance without rushing.
You should visit your doctor or travel nurse to find out what vaccinations you will need. Typically you will need your routine travel vaccinations to be in date and it is essential that your tetanus is up to date. Australia does not require any additional vaccinations to Europe.
For any more information, please see the Fit for Travel website or the UK government’s travel advice page for Australia.

Australia is generally a very safe country for travellers, and this tour is designed with safety in mind. You’ll be travelling with a group and supported by an experienced guide throughout the entire journey. Accommodation, transport, and activities are all pre-arranged and vetted for quality and safety.
As with any travel, it’s important to use common sense — look after your belongings, follow local advice, and be mindful around water, wildlife, and the sun. You’ll also receive a full safety briefing at the start of the trip, and support is available 24/7 if you ever need help.

Useful if arriving early or needing extra rest before the tour begins
Wi-Fi is available at most of the hostels you’ll stay in throughout the tour, especially in cities and larger towns like Sydney, Byron Bay, and Cairns. Speeds are generally good for messaging, browsing, and social media.
In more remote or island locations — like Fraser Island or during the Whitsundays sailing trip — Wi-Fi is limited or unavailable, and mobile signal may also be patchy. These are great moments to unplug and enjoy the natural surroundings.
Overall, you’ll have regular access to Wi-Fi across the trip, but it won’t be 24/7 everywhere.
You’ll mostly be in the Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) zone, which is GMT +10 hours.
During Daylight Saving Time (from early October to early April), some areas like Sydney, Byron Bay, and Brisbane shift to Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT), GMT +11, while Queensland (including Cairns and Fraser Island) does not observe daylight saving and stays on GMT +10 year-round.
Australian electrical appliances operate on 240v at 50hz but the socket outlets are not compatible with the other countries’ plugs. This means you will need a specific Australian adapter.
Because it’s the ultimate way to experience Australia’s East Coast — all the highlights, zero stress. You’ll travel with a fun, friendly group, have your accommodation, transport, and top activities sorted, and see iconic destinations like Byron Bay, Fraser Island, the Whitsundays, and the Great Barrier Reef.
It’s perfect if you want a mix of adventure, beaches, culture, and connection — all while making friends from around the world. Whether you’re taking a gap year, career break or just chasing sun and freedom, this trip gives you maximum experience with minimum hassle.
This East Coast tour is a group travel experience with a balance of structure and freedom. You’ll have a dedicated group leader with you for the full 5 weeks, who will manage logistics, lead activities, and offer support throughout the journey. They’re there to keep things running smoothly and to help you get the most out of each destination.
While there’s plenty of guidance and daily interaction with your leader, you’ll also have free time in each location to explore independently, relax, or choose optional activities. You’ll be encouraged to make your own choices and enjoy some flexibility within the itinerary.
During your free time or when taking part in optional extras, you’ll need to make safe, sensible decisions — but support is always available if needed. Emergency help is on hand for the full duration of your trip.
Project Reviews
“I’ve been quite busy exploring! The surf camp was amazing – I got to feed the stingrays at the beach which was fab – even if it was a little scary. It’s actually been pretty rainy the past few days, the locals all seem quite pleased with all the rain, which is a change compared to the UK. I’m...
