The Adventure Tourism Summer programme blends practical certifications with hands-on training in alpine climbing, downhill mountain biking, backpacking and guiding—ideal for outdoorsy people wanting to start or go into a career in adventure tourism.

This 6- or 12-month programme is delivered in small groups with interactive, scenario-based training so you’re ready for real mountain environments. You’ll build technical ability alongside leadership, risk management and decision-making for safe summer operations.

Real-world experience
Field-intensive training across the Coastal Mountains: climbing days, bike park/trail sessions, WFR simulations and multi-day backpacking that build a practical logbook for work in the outdoor industry.

The Adventure Tourism Summer programme blends practical certifications with hands-on training in alpine climbing, downhill mountain biking, backpacking and guiding—ideal for outdoorsy people starting a career in adventure tourism.

Programme length: 6 or 12 months
Training hours: 263.5 guided instruction hours (plus field days/logbook depending on intake)

Course breakdown:

  • Alpine Climbing — 68 hours

  • Wilderness First Responder (WFR) — 80 hours

  • Intro to Downhill Mountain Bike Skills — 22.5 hours

  • Experiential Leadership & Guiding — 45 hours

  • Backpacking — 48 hours

Skills you’ll gain:

  • Movement on rock, basic rope systems and belaying

  • Bike handling, braking, cornering and trail safety fundamentals

  • Route planning, navigation and multi-day logistics

  • Risk management, decision-making and group leadership

  • Industry knowledge, client care and foundational business skills

  • Stewardship and safe practices in outdoor environments

Outcome:
Graduate with a Programme Diploma and WFR certification, plus the technical grounding and leadership experience for entry-level roles across guiding, resorts and tour operations.

Extra costs:
Some activities may require lift tickets or Bike Park passes (not included in programme cost).

Must be 18+, physically fit and ready for alpine and outdoor adventure activities.

Shared housing arranged by Oyster partners in Whistler. WiFi and laundry included. Damage deposit required.

Self-catered accommodation with kitchens. Budget CAD $70–110 per week for groceries.

Travel arrangements

Fly to Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

Transfers to Whistler take around 2.5 hours by shuttle

Arrive on the Friday before your course begins; accommodation is available from Saturday afternoon.

More Information

You should be physically fit and ready for alpine and trail activities, but training is included for technical skills.

Graduates are prepared for entry-level roles in adventure tourism, with a pathway to guiding as additional certifications are gained.

  • Intern/assistant outdoor guide (hiking, intro alpine, tail guide)

  • Bike park & trail crew (operations, maintenance, safety sweeps)

  • MTB rental/retail technician (set-ups, tuning) and outdoor retail associate

  • Climbing gym floor staff/program assistant (belaying, session support)

  • Trip leader assistant/camp leader (backpacking and day programs)

  • Guide operations/dispatcher/logistics coordinator

  • Guest services/reservations/trip sales (recreational tourism)

  • Resort base operations (lifts, ticketing)

Note: Some roles may require additional training or certifications (e.g., AST2/CAA modules, advanced rope rescue, MTB coaching awards, ACMG assistant hiking/guide pathways, WFR refreshers, valid driver’s licence).

Evenings and weekends are free to explore Whistler and enjoy the summer activities. You will have study breaks where you may have up to a month to work full- time. This is best suited to those that want the freedom of working, whilst gaining a qualification and having free social time.

• Students accepted into this program must apply for a one year study permit. Oyster Worldwide will help with this application.
• A standard study permit (under the regulation R186F) allows work off campus up to 20 hours per week during regular academic
sessions and work full-time during scheduled breaks

For many years we have acted as an ‘introducer’ to the policy that has been tailored to meet the needs of Oyster Worldwide participants.

You should ensure that your insurance policy covers you for all activities.

Credit cards are advised for emergencies, as well as enough cash to see you through the first few days, there are ATM’s in the village.

Most people book with Oyster as individuals and meet the rest of the group on arrival in Whistler – however we welcome friends together!

 

Please visit your doctor or travel nurse to find out. It is unlikely that you will need anything in addition to your routine vaccinations, which should be up to date.

Whistler is in the West of Canada, on Pacific Standard Time and is 8 hours behind GMT (GMT -8).

Canada, like the US, operates on 110V, 60 cycle electric power. You should bring an adapter with you that has a two pronged (flat) plug.
